Bag of rice to sell for N9000 before December – APC leader

– Ganiyu Quadri, chairman of Alimosho LGA, says a bag of rice which is currently sold for N18,500, will drop to N9000 before December

– He says the agro-business scheme run by the Lagos state government in Kebbi state will put an end to the high cost of foodstuff in the Southwest

– He says the APC govt in Lagos swung into agro-business to ensure food security for its people

The price of a bag of rice, which is currently sold for N18,500, will drop to N9000 before December, according to Ganiyu Quadri, the chairman, Alimosho local government in Lagos state. Speaking after receiving a delegation of Rotary Club of Akowonjo 9110, led by by its district-governor, Patrick Ikheloa, and president, Shola Abidakun, Quadri gave assurance that the agro-business scheme run by the Lagos state government in Kebbi state will put an end to the high cost of foodstuff in the Southwest.

According to the council chief, the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in Lagos swung into agro-business to ensure food security for its people, The Nation reports.

“By the end of this year, or first quarter next year, things will change in Lagos. Already, we are into agro-business in Kebbi state. We have massive land on which we planted grains, among which is rice, our people’s staple food. And it is expected that the truck-loads of rice will storm Lagos soon.

“So, I can assure you that before the end of this year, the price of a bag of rice, which is N18,000, will drop to N9,000.”

However, Quadri regretted the financial strains in which councils found themselves. He said one of the mandates of sole administrators was to see how they could pay up debts owed by councils. The bold declaration from Quadri comes just days after an investigation showed how the prices of food items have crashed in Hadejia, Jigawa state.

According to NAN, the crash in food price is as a result of ‘a significant increase in the supply of agricultural produce to the market’. The investigation by NAN on Tuesday, August 23, at Hadejia market, showed that food prices were down by about 30%. Now, a bag of millet goes for N14, 000 as against N18, 000 while a bag of paddy rice went for N8, 500 as against its previous price of N11, 000. Maize and sorghum were sold at N11, 000 and N13, 000 down from their old prices of N15, 000 and N17, 000, respectively
